Since last year, Armenia and Turkey have begun the process of normalizing relations, within which certain achievements have been recorded, but there are still many unresolved issues. This was stated by Speaker of the National Assembly of Armenia Alen Simonyan, speaking at the summit of heads of parliaments of the member states of the Black Sea Economic Cooperation Organization, dedicated to the 30th anniversary of the organization, on May 4.
“We hope that in the near future it will be possible not only to transport humanitarian goods through the land border, but also to open it for international traffic and trade,” Simonyan said.
He also mentioned the tragedy in Belgrade, noting: “There was a tragedy in Belgrade yesterday. I express my condolences to my Serbian colleague and once again express my support to the government and people of Turkey in connection with the death of tens of thousands of people during the devastating earthquake on February 6th.
Armenia knows perfectly well what an earthquake is, and our country was one of the first to respond to a natural disaster by sending humanitarian aid and a rescue team to the disaster zone.
I consider it extremely positive that the humanitarian cargo crossed the land border from Armenia to Turkey along the Margara bridge, which had been closed for 30 years before that.”
