This December a man is bringing a unique taste of North Africa to east London. Lamiri Harissa – which was conceived by owner Tooting-raised Sam Lamiri during lockdown – is selling briks – a staple Tunisian street food – out of a pop-up shop in Hackney ’s Netil Market this month.
For those who don’t know what a Brik is – it’s a triangular pastry which tends to consist of a whole egg, chopped onion, tuna, harissa and parsley. The spicy shop will be open every Wednesday to Sunday this month between 11am to 6pm.
But unlike most other briks, London’s only Tunisian street food stall uses harissa handmade in Tunisia, jars of which can be bought in the shop or online here. In its early days, Sam would frantically peddle around the capital flogging his jars of harissa to independent stores.
Now he’s stocked in Selfridges, Moxon’s, and even as far as Canada. Sam, 28, said: “This month we’ve launched London’s FIRST Tunisian street food stand, and east London can’t get enough. We’re here to share one of the most underrepresented countries in London when it comes to food.
“With slight limitations due to space and usually being a one man band, we’re starting off with Brik. What is brik? Imagine a large samosa-type deal, but filled with Tuna, parsley, capers, potato, harissa, cheese and a WHOLE EGG.
“Wrapped in filo pastry and fried golden brown. When done correctly you’ll bite in ti be greeted by a dark orange runny yolk and it’s truly something to behold. He added: “Basically brik is BANGING and we wanna share it with the world! “
